Narrative

OLD BRIDGE, NJ – A 20-year-old man from Old Bridge has been charged in connection with a deadly wrong-way crash that occurred on Sunday night along Route 18.

First responders say James Cannici was driving a Nissan Rogue when he made a left turn from Ferris Road onto the wrong side of the state highway at approximately 11:17 p.m. The SUV then collided with a Honda Accord and another vehicle.

A passenger in the Accord, identified as 45-year-old Florence Akoma from Sayreville, was killed in the incident, while the Honda driver sustained serious injuries.

Police arrested Cannici at the scene on charges of driving while intoxicated. Subsequently, on Monday, he faced additional charges, including first-degree aggravated manslaughter, second-degree vehicular homicide, third-degree aggravated assault, and fourth-degree assault by auto.
